Truman O Angell

Brycen had to do an ancestor report for school.  He chose to do it on Truman Angell

My ancestor is Truman Angell.  He is my 4th great uncle.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on the 5th of June in 1810.  He lived there until he was 21.
His father left the family when he was young, and Truman tried to help his mother.  He moved her
to New York to be with some friends.   While they lived there they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints
Truman also married Polly Johnson.  At about 23 years of age he went on a mission for about 9 weeks to Rhode Island.
His missionary companion was Joseph Holbrook.  Joseph Holbrook also happens to be my 4th great grandfather.  Joseph
married Truman's sister Caroline.
Truman and is wife moved to Missouri.  His mother decided to stay behind.  They were driven out of the state of missouri
by mobs who did not like the Mormons.
They moved to Kirtland Ohio.  Truman helped do work on the Temple that the Mormon Saints were building there.
Joseph Smith asked him to help build it.  He was also able to attend the Temple Dedication which was a very special
experience.
Truman's family moved to Nauvoo when the Saints were again forced from their homes.  His wife and children were sick and
it was a difficult time.  Truman was called to be the superintendant of joiner work (joining the parts of the building)
Truman said that they were all persecuted by angry men and he was so sad when Joseph Smith and His brother, Hyrum, were
killed.  When the architect of the temple left Nauvoo, Truman was left in charge of completing the lower hall of the Nauvoo temple.

Truman said, " I was one of the Pioneers in coming to and making a home for the Saints in Utah in 1847, and returned to Winter Quarters. The

following winter I made a fitout and took my family, in the spring, and started for our new home, arriving in Utah in the fall with an ox team, a

distance of over 1000 miles, moving my sick wife on her back every rod of the way, having two children with us, having buried three in Winter

Quarters. Soon after my arrival I was chosen architect for the Church--the former architect, William Weeks, having deserted and left for the east,

thereby taking himself from the duties of the said office--which position I hold to this day. (1883)"

Truman was asked to work on many buildings in Salt Lake City.  He helped with the Saint George Temple.  He was the
main architect of the Salt Lake Temple.

This is a quote I found about him:  Truman O. Angell, the architect, now approaching his seventieth year, worked with President John Taylor as he had with President Young. The walls of the temple were pushed upward. By 1887 the stone work was completed, except for the towers; but fate did not permit the architect to live to see the finished building, Truman O. Angell died on October 16, 1887, at the age of 77. For more than thirty-five years he had toiled and labored on the great structure. It was said that he knew every stone in its walls.

Of Truman O. Angell, Wendell Ashton has written: "As long as the Salt Lake Temple stands, there will be a magnificent monument to the patience, skill and dedication of its architect."]

I think this is a really great man to be my ancestor  I am also blessed because my Great Grandpa Timmerman was the resident architect of the Washington DC Temple (see this post)

Washington DC Temple - Our 25th Wedding Anniversary

Chris had a chance to go to Baltimore for work so we decided to turn it into a trip for us to go to the Washington D.C. Temple for our 25th anniversary.

The last time that Chris was in Washington DC/Baltimore was when he was 7 years old (1974) just before the temple dedication.   Grandpa Timm was the resident architect on the
temple and Chris spent the summer with Grandma and Grandpa Timmerman while they were
constructing the temple.

Here's our first view from the beltway:

Chris was beyond excited

The only real memories he had was Grandpa Timm telling "off" a construction worker because he was smoking while he was installing carpet in the Temple Chapel, and the construction trailer.
Today, we were able to go in that chapel and the memory came flooding back.
The temple is so beautiful and we spent a wonderful, spiritual day inside.

In the visitor center we watched some videos on the history of the temple and we found pictures of Grandpa Timm in two of them.

Here is the link to the video

On the way back to Baltimore, we made the great decision to drive the Beltway to Washington DC.  We didn't get to stop, but we drove past the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial (under construction so it was blue) the Capitol and the White House.  OK for a really quick trip.

We came back to Baltimore and Chris went to the Baltimore Orioles game at Camden Yards.

Our Hotel overlooks the Chesapeake Bay and since we live on Chesapeake we think that's pretty neat :)

25 wonderful years together!

Temple Blessings

Today Ben was able to go receive his endowment in the Jordan River Temple.
Elder Jeffrey R Holland said "The highest covenants we can make are in the temple. That is where we make our most solemn promises to our Father in Heaven and where He opens to us more fully the real meaning of His promises to us. "  Also....
When you go to the temple, you will begin to understand the significance of those temple covenants, the inextricable link between your endowment there and your missionary success.
Indeed, the very word endowment conveys the essence of that vital link. An endowment is a gift. It contains the same root word as dowry, which is a special gift to start a new couple on their married life. While I was president of Brigham Young University, I spent a certain amount of my time trying to build up the university’s endowment, its treasury of gifts from generous donors.
That is what God does for us every time we make a covenant with Him. He endows us. We promise to do certain things, depending on the ordinance, and He promises special gifts in return—wonderful gifts, unspeakable gifts, nearly incomprehensible gifts."

It was a very wonderful experience.  Ben and Chris were able to receive instruction from President Haight (he is the son of David B Haight)  and I was privileged to go to the instruction room with Sis. Haight.

I know that temple blessings allow our families to be together forever and allow us to become like our Father and His Son and to live with them again.

Frightful Friday

Our elementary school Halloween Parade was this morning.  I went early to get a good seat.  It's so fun to see all of the creative costumes and cute kids.  Brycen wore his Jedi costume and Kaitlyn changed from her ghost costume to a Baby PJ costume.  I was out buying footie pajamas last night.  I think she was just tired of painting her face with Big Black circles on her eyes.  She was a ghost for the family party and ward carnival but she really enjoyed being a baby again!
I came home and Jenessa called from the school.  She was scared because she was having trouble with her vision. We decided she is having migrain headaches.  I get strange wavy lights in my vision when I have a migraine.  So she must take after me.
I went back to the school to help with Kaitlyn's class Halloween party.  They had some fun games.  They filled a plastic pumkin with rice and then halloween objects.  The kids had to feel around in the rice and write down what they thought it was.  They also played a musical candy walk game.  If they land on a number that is called when the music stops they get a candy from the bowl.  Each number also has a "different way" to walk around the circle...for example skip, jump, jump on 1 foot, crawl, mummy walk.  It was fun

Chris and I went to the temple to do some initiatory.  After I came home and made halloween chili and breadsticks.   Now Jenessa is baby sitting for the Shulsens and Tyler is at the Rec Center.  The rest of the fam is downstairs watching "Ghostbusters'.  Although Brycen is a little scared.     We really miss Jordan.

Fall Recess

All 5 kids are out for Fall Recess so today was the perfect day to make my Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread.
This is my ultimate fall recipe when the days are perfectly autumn.

I like to use mini chocolate chips because it makes the pumpkin bread sooo chocolately.

I use the Lion House Pumpkin Bread recipe and the secret is adding a box a instant vanilla pudding
I use the chocolate chips instead of the nuts.

1 1/3 cups vegetable oil

5 eggs

1 16-ounce can pumpkins

2 cups flour

2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 3-ounce packages instant vanilla pudding

1 cup walnuts chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix oil, eggs, and pumpkin in mixing bowl and beat well. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking soda. Add to pumpkin mixture and mix till blended. Stir in pudding mix (regular or instant) and nuts. Pour into greased large loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour. Makes 2 loaves.

Brycen and Ty love it!

Chris took Kaitlyn to work with him today.  He spoiled her by taking her to the Lion House Pantry for lunch she had salmon and he had prime rib!   They also went over to Temple Square

Temple Blessings

Since I had surgery two and a half weeks ago I have been recuperating at home.
Today, however I was able to go to the Temple again.  Each week, as I go to the temple
I feel peace and I feel my Savior's love.  Today as I again entered the beautiful rooms
I felt so happy to be back.  One blessing in particular I received while I was in the temple, is that I will
be completely healed from my Nephrectomy (kidney removal)  and that my remaining kidney will
be healthy throughout my life.
